International and Japanese students in the 地域活性化策 “chiiki kasseika saku” or “Regional Revitalization” CSL course enjoyed exploring and learning about the rich history found in Isahaya city. Students met at the university entrance on July 9th of 2022 to join a “saruku” walking tour around Isahaya. CSL students learned about local history and historical sites located between Nagasaki Wesleyan University and the downtown area. Highlights include enjoying Azalea Park and viewing the ruins of Takashiro or Isahaya castel which was built during the Taisho period. The “Spectacles Bridge” or “Megane-bashi” is a double arch stone bridge which spans a pond in Azalea Park. The bridge is twice the size of the famous Spectacles Bridge in Nagasaki city. The bridge, a designated cultural asset, was originally built over the Honmyo river in 1839, but relocated to the park after the flood of 1957. Participants were also able to learn of various historical places and local events. It was a very memorable day.
